The 20-Amp SmartlockPro Self-Test GFCI offers a convenient way to ensure that it is providing protection. While monthly testing of GFCIs is recommended, many users tend to forget to do so regularly. Fortunately, there is now technology available that can supplement manual testing by automatically conducting a test of the circuit. In June 2015, the UL standard 943 for Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters was revised to enhance safety for end-users. This revision requires GFCI manufacturers to include an auto-monitoring (self-test) feature that performs periodic tests to verify the GFCI's ability to respond to a ground-fault. If the GFCI fails the test, it must visually and/or audibly indicate to the user that it needs to be replaced.

In addition to the automatic self-test, the GFCI also conducts regular internal tests to ensure its ability to respond to a ground fault. A status indicator light displays power and protection status, as well as indicating any line/load reversal. The patented lockout action prevents a reset if the GFCI is damaged and unable to respond to a ground fault. Furthermore, the GFCI provides continuous ground fault protection, detecting and tripping on actual ground faults even during self-testing.
